Ireland is a beautiful country with many wonderful cities and regions. If you are looking for an amazing vacation, Ireland has it all! One of the best places to visit in Ireland is Cavan, located on the border between Northern Ireland and Eire. This city offers so much that even if you only have a week or two to explore this region, there are plenty of things to do!
We’ve compiled a list of 6 things to do for you and your family!
The Cavan Castle is in the heart of town and can be seen from many spots around. This medieval fortress was originally built by the Normans as a Norman stronghold, but has since been renovated into an amazing museum that showcases Celtic history!
The Cabra Castle was originally built in 1760 and has lots of history and interesting features to explore. The castle, which covers 88 acres of land, also includes its own 9-hole golf course. Guests can stay the night in one of eighty historic rooms (some room sizes include a lord’s bedchamber with splendour or a spacious elegance) for a reasonable price.
The Cavan Castle is open every day with admission prices starting at around €11 for adults and €6.50 for children, making it one of the most affordable things to do in Cavan!
The county town is in a pleasant district of low green hills. In ancient times it was the seat of rulers east of Breifne, the O’Reillys. Their primary residence on Tullymongan Hill, and only Franciscan Friary founded 1300 by Giolla Iosa O’Reilly remains to this day.
The town of Cavan has a very quaint feel to it, creating the perfect atmosphere for exploring and window shopping. There are plenty of shops in town offering local crafts, antiques, handmade jewellery and more!
If you want to explore some local Irish history while taking a wander around town, stop by The Museum of Cavan, which is located close to the town centre.
On Saturdays, there’s a farmers market in Cavan which offers fresh produce and much more!
The local Cavan pub has live music on Fridays and Saturdays, with an open mic session every Tuesday. There is always plenty of fun to be had, and it’s the perfect opportunity to meet some locals!
The pub also serves delicious homemade food if you want something a little more substantial than just some drinks.
While Cavan may not have any Michelin-star restaurants, it has some great pubs!
The Lough Ramor is a beautiful lake with some great scenery and plenty of wildlife. It is the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic, whether you want to enjoy lunch on your own or share it with friends and/or family!
A walk around the Lough Ramor offers stunning views of waterlilies in full bloom and an abundance of other wildflowers. The walk takes roughly an hour and a half.
The Lough Ramor is also home to many species of birds, which makes it the perfect place for bird enthusiasts! The lake itself has an abundance of wildflowers such as celandines, buttercups, cowslips. You might even spot a red squirrel here or there if you’re lucky!
The Lough Ramor is just a short drive from Cavan, so it’s the perfect spot for a day trip if you have the time.

Angling Guide Donal Kelly of Castlehamilton Estate reports on the pike fishing on the Lough Oughter system…
Conditions were OK for boat fishing in the Lough Oughter System in Cavan this week with light westerly winds and moderate showers. Some nice pike were caught on a range of Salmo Lures and rubber Shads by fishermen staying at the Castlehamilton Fishing Centre in Killeshandra, Co Cavan, and guided by local pike fishing guide Donal Kelly.
Red, orange and blue were the colours of the day. The takes were not very aggressive, so we had to be alert to know when to strike. 12 pike ranging in size up to 96cm were caught on the day and all safely returned to the water.
